Our origins are in the tradition of Oxford House, we evolved as our residents needed more support than a strictly peer-run recovery organization could provide. Sober living is a residential environment where individuals recovering from addiction to alcohol and drugs can live in community with like-minded housemates. To that end, the residence is alcohol and drug free and each house member participates in its upkeep and operation. As housemates, they support each other in recovery and hold each other accountable in attending to daily chores and obligations. Over the next 3 years, he saw the difference these rules made in his house, and how they helpedthe men in early recovery to stay sober. In 2002, Callan opened a second branch of that houseand ran both residences as sober houses. He moved into the new house to guide and support thenew roommates and hired a house manager for the original residence.
Stepping Stones staff work closely with new residents and support the needs of all housing units. Each house democratically elects a house president, who assists with leading meetings, intake of new residents, and reporting to Stepping Stones staff in the case of an issue. They are trusted servants who have a vested interest in the smooth functioning of the housing environment. Each home has weekly meetings including a house business meeting where practical issues are discussed such as chores and any behavior that may be disruptive to the house. Additionally, there are two recovery-oriented meetings including a 12-Step group and a literature study.
Through shared experiences, mutual support, and a commitment to service, we strive to create a space where healing, hope and transformation can take place. On March 1, 1996, Callan came to Minnesota ready to get sober. He went through extended primary treatment, a halfway house, sober house, and the apartment that started the network of sober houses that Callan runs today. Stepping Stones is not a treatment center nor a traditional halfway house.
We place great emphasis on the concept of group accountability. It is at the core of our model as it both fosters personal responsibility and allows the house to function orderly. Our recovery homes foster independence – house expenses in the form of “rent” are paid by residents. This covers utilities, drug testing, and the housing itself.
Each Victory Programs has a dedicated house manager whose responsibility is to ensure the well being of the house occupants. When a resident first enters our community, we expect them to focus on their recovery, forming relationships with their housemates, and attaining gainful employment.
